Deyaa Alrwishdi is an entrepreneurial educator, project manager, and young legal scholar. He grew up in tight financial conditions in the care of a single mother who worked as an educator, in Homs, Syria. Despite these challenges, Mr. Alrwishdi has managed to attain highest educational achievements and attend top universities in the world. Mr. Alrwishdi began his education journey in Syria where he completed his Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) while he was working for the Syrian Construction and Establishment Institute. Mr. Alrwishdi apprenticed at Al-Monajed Law Firm where he focused on property, commercial, and contract law. Following the Syrian uprising in 2011, Mr. Alrwishdi worked at the national and international levels to advocate for victims of human rights violations in Syria and train citizen-journalist and activists on the laws of war. Mr. Alrwishdi has been a leading voice in Syrian civil society; he founded and led multiple legal networks and organizations, including the Center for Rule of Law and Good Governance, with the goal of amplifying the voices of Syrian civil society and working towards the transition to justice in post-conflict situations. Most recently, he led the efforts of the Syrian Initiative at American University to document and combat sexual and gender-based violence perpetrated during the ongoing conflict in Syria. Currently, Mr. Alrwishdi is a doctoral candidate at Harvard Law School and adjunct professor of law at American University Washington. His academic research focuses on public international law, constitutionalism and constitutions, the laws of war, and human rights law. Mr. Alrwishdi has a Master of Law, LL.M., from Harvard Law School, (requirement fulfilled, degree waived), 2022; a Master of Public Administration, M.P.A., from School of Public Affairs at American University, 2021; a Master of Law, LL.M., from American University Washington College of Law, 2016; and a Bachelor of Law, LL.B., from Damascus University, 2010.

Silja Aebersold is an innovative educator and young legal scholar from Switzerland. She grew up in an educated family that instilled with her a passion for learning. Since young age, Ms. Aebersold showed aptitude to reading philosophical and enlightening literature, which drove her down the road of academia. Ms. Aebersold studied a Bachelor of Law (LL.B.) in St. Gall University and a Master’s of Law (LL.M.) in Lucerne University. During her Bachelor, Ms. Aebersold attended the University of Los Andes in Colombia as an exchange student. There, she volunteered to assist indigenous communities to improve their living conditions. This brief experience shaped Ms. Aebersold career and future plans as she devoted her talents and education for the service of these people. In 2016, Ms. Aebersold pursued a doctoral degree in which she proposed and advocated for the implementation of a legal framework that enhances human rights protection of indigenous and Afro-descendant people in Latin America. During her doctorate study, she advised multiple NGOs on human rights, the laws of war, and legal documentation. To that end, she directed the Free Syrian Lawyers Association’s legal documentation project, led the efforts of the Center of the Rule of Law and Good Governance to increase collaboration among Syrian NGOs, and advised the Syrian Initiative at American University Washington College of Law on variety of topics, including international criminal law, international human rights law, and the laws of war. Ms. Aebersold has also worked with international NGOs as consultant expert in the field of sexual and gender-based violence.
